If you’re driving near Mensendick on 67th Avenue,
you’re going to want to slow down during school hours.
Thanks to a grant from the Arizona Department of Transportation,
school zone speed flashing systems and speed radar signs have been installed
along 67th Avenue. The signs reduce the speed on 67th
Avenue from 40 MPH to 30 MPH while school is in session. The idea is to create
a safer environment for students who are walking to school, or playing on the
playground that borders 67th Avenue and Missouri. Between 1,500 and
1,800 vehicles pass by Mensendick during arrival and dismissal times. Between
2006-2011 there were more than 290 accidents in the area, 47 percent of which
involved car-pedestrian or car-bicycle crashes.
The City of Glendale, working with the GESD risk management
office, received the grant through ADOT’s C.R.A.S.H. (Community At Risk With
Accidents When Speeding Happens) program.
